Mississippi National Golf Course Sale Referred to Planning Commission

The Red Wing City Council has the referred the sale of Mississippi National Golf Course to the Planning Commission as required by law. The hearing is scheduled for April 19, 2011.

The duty of the Planning Commission is to ensure that the sale is in compliance with the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The critical importance of the Planning Commission hearing is this:  if that Planning Commission decides that the sale is not in compliance with the Comprehensive Plan, then the sale would be disallowed, unless the Council votes by a 2/3 vote that the Comprehensive Plan does not apply to the sale.  If the Comprehensive Plan does not apply to this sale, its hard to imagine when it would ever apply.

The City will have a representative appear at the Planning Commission hearing to argue that the sale is in compliance with the Comprehensive Plan.  However, a fair and full hearing on the compliance issue requires citizen input.  Otherwise, only one side will be heard.  Financial issues related to the sale will likely not be addressed by the Planning Commission.  Those issues will be addressed at the Public Forum on the sale and by the City Council.
